Surf Parade
Inverloch
Design and construction of an extension/renovation of a 1960s surf shack for use as a permanent residence rather than just a holiday home. The brief began with the concept of adding a new master bedroom & bathroom, energy efficiency improvements and expanded over the course of design development.
The existing building had previously been extended a number of times which made for acomplicated floorplan, a single bathroom for 3 bedrooms, almost no insulation, and was clad & lined with asbestos sheeting. Care was taken to minimise cutting or removal of the hazardous materials where possible. The site is located immediately across from a heavily vegetated foreshore and is designated a Bushfire Prone Area with BAL rating of Flame Zone.
Works consisted of consolidating the living and dining areas through the deletion of the original bedroom, the addition of a second bathroom and construction of two new bedrooms including a large master bedroom. The addition of a front door and enclosing of the carport provides security and delineates the private zones. In order to improve energy efficiency, where possible the internal linings were removed in order to insulate the walls, and the subfloor was enclosed and insulated in both the new and existing areas. Through careful design, it was possible to reduce the BAL rating to BAL40 in order to lower the construction cost.
